From white gloves and top hats to everyday wear

Follow along here to learn the history of the Aafart. Since 1882, Odense Aafart has sailed on Odense's beautiful river. Odense Aafart has gone from transporting ‘the rich and famous’ from Munke Mose to Fruens Bøge to being a journey for everyone. Today, Odense Aafart embraces everything from family Sunday trips on the river, wine tasting and music events to exciting corporate events and team building. Hop on board and sail with us through the history of Aafarten...

1882

Aafart is established

Odense Aafart was established in 1882, but to understand why we sail up the river, we need to go back a few decades. It was already in 1828 that it had become very fashionable for the upper middle class to go on picnics or to forest balls out in Fruens Bøge. However, only the noble bourgeoisie were allowed to attend these events. Women in service, coachmen, waiters and glassworks workers had to stay at home.

At this time, the easiest way to get from Munke Mose to Fruens Bøge was by boat. Odense Aafart was therefore established in 1882 to meet the demand. It was soon realised that rowing up the river was hard and tiring, so in 1883 the first steamboat ‘Kvik’ was introduced. This was followed by the ‘Pilen’ in 1886. There was also ‘Odin’, ‘Skt. Alban’ and finally ‘Benedict’ in 1890.

‘Sejle op ad aaen’

One of the most famous things associated with Odense River is probably the song ‘Sejle op ad åen’, which has become part of Danish cultural heritage. This song was first performed in 1895 as part of the summer revue at Folketeatret. This theatre is located just a few metres from Aafarten's kiosk and the river itself. The original song is about the trip with Aafarten's steamboats up the river to the forest balls in Fruens Bøge and down the river again back to Munke Mose. The song has had several different versions of its lyrics. What we sing at gatherings today is a shortened version of the song.

1899

Things were going well here

During these years, Odense Aafart was doing very well. In 1899, 150,000 passengers travelled on Aafarten's steamships. There was also a good turnover. At that time, it cost 15 øre for adults and 10 øre for children to sail with Aafarten from Munke Mose to Fruens Bøge. To return home, it cost 25 øre for adults and 15 øre for children.

Mail delivery

Sailing up and down the river wasn't just for fun, however. In 1900, Odense Aafarten's ships were also used to deliver mail to businesses and private residents along the river. It's because of this history that Aafarten ships are still authorised to fly split flags today. Aafarten even had their very own stamps for the parcels that were distributed on the river.

Special stamps with the text ‘DAMPBAADE PAA ODENSE AA’ were made for this purpose. The stamps cost 5 øre for a parcel up to 5 pounds and 10 øre for a parcel up to 10 pounds. This is also the reason why the Aafarten can sail with split flags to this day.

1911

Trams provide competition

Life hasn't always been easy for Aafarten. In 1898, Denmark's first cycle path was established in Odense. This path was on Sdr. Boulevard and led all the way out to Fruens Bøge. This made it free for people to get to Fruens Bøge. However, it was the tram that Odense Aafart had to succumb to. By 1911, the new trams had been introduced and this was a faster and more convenient way for the people of Odense to get around the city.

The coming world war also resulted in a shortage of coal for the steamships. The bales in Fruens Bøge had become much less popular and eventually ceased to exist. During these years, there was a great lack of interest and resources.

1930’erne

 The revival of Odense Aafart

However, no one had given up on Aafarten completely. In the interwar period, especially in the 1930s, Odense Municipality made many attempts to revive people's interest in sailing up and down the river. They did this by, among other things, establishing new restaurants in Fruens Bøge. These included Restaurant Skoven and Carlslund, which had long been popular eateries. Of these eateries, Carlslund is the only one that still exists in its original location. The revival was a success, and Odense Aafart began sailing again, albeit with fewer passengers than before.

1932

Thorvald Stauning signs rules for travelling on the river

In 1932, the speed limit is lowered. A new law was signed by Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning, making it illegal to sail more than 5 nautical miles (9 km/h) in Odense Å. Violation of these restrictions would result in a fine of at least DKK 5 (DKK 197).

The war also affects Aafarten

World War II was another tough period for Aafarten. Just like during the First World War, resources were in short supply and not as many people were in a festive mood. During this period, Odense Aafarten had to temporarily stop travelling on the river.

The 50s and 60s

Schoolchildren and cleaning up

The 1950s and 60s were a quiet period for Aafarten. It had become a tradition for schoolchildren from Jutland and Funen to sail from Munke Mose to the Zoo at the end of the school year. Many schoolchildren were transported during this period.

However, there were problems with pollution in the river. Especially in the 60s, a lot of money was spent on cleaning the river. Among other things, a new sludge sewer was built along the river from Dalum to Ejby Mølle.

1973

From Aafart to Åfart

Odense Aafart has had a few different owners. Among them is Knud Laursen, who in 1973 informed Odense Municipality that he was interested in buying Aafart from the previous owner. Knud Laursen had stood in his hot dog stand for a few years and observed the sailing, and believed that he would be able to make it all work. With Knud Laursen's purchase, Aafarten changed its name to Åfarten. The purchase also included the motorboat ‘Benedikt’, 12 rowing boats and an ice cream parlour. In the spring of 1974, Knud Laursen was ready to sail on the river again.

1995-1996

Renovation

However, things need to be maintained and in 1995 Odense Municipality decides to renovate Aafarten's square in Munke Mose and build a new kiosk. This forces Aafarten's sailing to be suspended until 1996, when the square and the new cube-shaped kiosk are completed.

2009

New owners

It was soon time for a generational change - quite literally. In 2009, Knud Laursen's daughter Trine Laursen and son-in-law Morten Skytte took over Odense Aafarten. They continued to offer new events and wonderful sailing trips to Odense residents and tourists.

2014

Filosoffen

In 2014, Odense Aafarten's kiosk moved from the cube-shaped booth to premises in the newly built Filosoffen, which also houses a café and art gallery. Renting this new space enabled Aafarten to optimise ticket sales, boat rentals and improve the user experience. The move to Filosoffen did away with Aafarten's freestanding stall and the cube-shaped kiosk was demolished the same year.

2017

Morten takes over

Not long after, Aafarten had to change management again. However, this was not a dramatic upheaval. In 2017, Morten Skytte took over as director of Odense Aafart.

2020

New CEO in Odense Aafart

In 2020, Morten Skytte will step down as CEO of Odense Aafart. Instead, he hires Eva Pasgaard as Odense Aafart's new CEO. Morten believes that Eva has the opportunity to bring a new drive, new ideas and good experiences that can be used to bring Odense residents and tourists more new and exciting experiences with Odense Aafart.

2020

Corona fighter of the year

In spring 2020, Odense Aafart, like the rest of the country, will be affected by Covid-19 lockdowns, and the season on the boats will start two months later than usual. This caused many headaches for the small seasonal business, but the challenges are being turned into opportunities. A wide range of initiatives are launched, including support posters, pedal boat events, children's treasure hunts and community singing from a garden on Langelinje. As a result, Aafarten makes it through a very challenging year and is recognised for its diligence and ingenuity when it is named ‘Corona Fighter of the Year’ in Best of Odense in 2020. Best of Odense.

2021

New teambuilding concept

Aafarten is still active and diligent in coming up with new concepts and products for all customers. In 2021, the Mystery Tourwill be introduced. Companies and groups of family or friends will have the opportunity to solve mysteries and puzzles together. Mystery Tour is a thrilling hunt for the truth, with the best of team building, escape rooms and puzzle hunting. All this combined with an idyllic boat trip on the river Odense Å.

2022

140th anniversary and annual pass

In 2022, Odense Aafart celebrated another milestone: its 140th anniversary. Despite the great success, Aafarten has no plans to slow down. On the contrary, 2022 has seen the development of a number of innovative and exciting concepts, including the launch of the long-awaited annual pass and an app focusing on teambuilding and thrills all year round.

2023

The tour boats will be electrically powered and have solar panels on the roof

In 2023, Aafarten took a step in the sustainable direction to support Odense's goal of being CO2-neutral by 2030. Almost DKK 2 million was invested in switching to electric motors and installing solar panels on the roofs of the tour boats. By switching from diesel to electricity, the trip on the river becomes more silent and you get closer to nature. The solar cells make it possible to produce up to 90% of the power for the boats. The big project started back in 2019, but it wasn't until just before the Easter holidays in 2023 that the sustainable boats were finally allowed to sail on the river with guests.

The new silent experience not only makes the trip more idyllic, but it also provides greater peace of mind for the surrounding neighbours and those walking around Odense Å.
